In this article I’m going to share with you all of my clothing hacks for plus sized women! Some of them are neat tricks you can do with everyday objects and some of them are products and accessories that you might not have considered before. Let’s get right into it!
Use a Paperclip to Extend Your Bra Straps
Wear Your Hair Down
Letting your hair down is the easiest way to look a size smaller. Avoid ponytails and buns because they will make your face look rounder. You can leave your hair down and try side braids that will catch instant attention.
Wear Knee-High Boots
Knee-high boots will make your legs appear longer and give an ordinary outfit a little attitude. Wearing mesh tights under your boots will make thick legs look amazing. High heels and pointed toes also look great for plus size women. Don’t wear any shoes with box toes though.
Remove Pilling With a Pumice Stone
This plus size hack is special for us ladies with thick thighs. I hate when those little pills of fabric start to form between the legs of my favorite pants because my thighs touch. We can remove the pills with a pumice stone—yeah that one in your bathroom right now! It’s really easy. You just have to run the stone over the spots that are pilling.
Sadly, I don’t have any hacks for how to deal with the fabric wearing through. If you have one please share it in the comments!!
Invest in Clothing Made with Stretchable Fabrics
Invest your clothing budget on t-shirts, tanks, leggings and tights made of stretchable material. Avoid stiff and firm fabrics because they naturally stay further away from your body. That causes you to look a little bigger and boxier. Instead, wear lighter, softer, stretchable fabrics and flaunt what ya got! We both know that stretchable fabrics are way more comfy too.
Here are fabrics that will NOT stretch:
- Woven Twill
- Woven Poplin
Here are fabrics that WILL stretch:
- Viscose Rayon
Use a Hair Tie to Button Pants
Got a favorite pair of jeans that just won’t quite button? Use a hair tie to close the gap! Learn how in the gif below.
Buy Multiple Colors of Your Favorites
You and I both know how hard it is to find clothes you love that fit just right. Well, when you do find that perfect piece, buy it in a few different colors! Darker colors and black are best for our plus size body types.
Find Out What Your Measurements Are
Do you know your body measurements? If you figure them out, then it will be much easier to buy clothes online based on their measurements chart. Not sure about your numbers? Get measured by a professional if you have the means, or you can do it yourself with a cloth tape measure. Speaking of which, check out my article on 9 ways you can use a cloth tape measure.
Wear Multiple Bracelets, Not Just One
If you’re a plus sized woman with thicker wrists, you might make your wrists look even thicker if you wear one bracelet. Instead, try wearing several bracelets of different of different styles. This is a fun way to spice up an outfit.
Wear Shapewear or Waist Trainers
Does it feel like every outfit shows your belly fat? Don’t lose hope, lose the muffin top by treating yourself to a tummy tucking waist trainer corset or some shapewear! It will flatten your body and really show off your beautiful curves, especially if you’ve got an hourglass body type.
Ali Levine, a plus sized stylist, says “Shapewear allows women to have a skinnier and tighter figure. It could be worn day-to-day as well as for special occasions. The way that the elastic fabrics are cut makes it so that when worn, the garment nips and tucks the body.”
Just make sure your waist trainer or shapewear isn’t too tight!
Wear Tops with Deep Necklines
If you want to draw attention away from another part of your body, wearing a deep (but not too deep!) neckline is a good option. A deep neckline instantly slims down your figure. You can wear a deep V or U neckline, which looks flattering and sensual.
Crop tops are a great choice for this fashion hack too. Wear your favorite crop under a jacket and you got a good outfit! Crop tops look amazing on plus size beauties as it enhances our sexy, full figures. You can pair that up with a high-waist pencil skirt or jeans.
Opt for Small Prints Instead of Large Prints
Having huge prints (like big polka dots) on your clothing can ruin an outfit. It will make you look bulkier which is why you should choose a small print instead. Alternatively, you can get your fabric printed as per your own design.
While we’re on the topic, stripes can be beautiful but they can also be tricky. Horizontal stripes can make you look wider. A vertical stripe is a safer choice because it will make you look leaner and taller.
